Don't let Obama bailout the insurance companies

President Obama made many outrageous statements last night in his State of the Union address, but perhaps his most ridiculous claim was that ObamaCare is working.

It is not working for the sick who have lost their insurance coverage or doctor, those who have been hit by skyrocketing premium increases, or the doctors driven out of medical practice.

But ObamaCare may be working for power-hungry politicians and bureaucrats.

And it is working for President Obama’s corporate cronies, some of whom may soon get a taxpayer bailout.

Hidden within ObamaCare is a provision guaranteeing the profits of insurance companies that participate in ObamaCare’s exchanges.

That’s right - ObamaCare not only guarantees customers for insurance companies via the “individual mandate” that forces Americans to obtain a government-approved insurance policy, but it guarantees the insurance companies will profit from their participation in ObamaCare’s exchanges!

If the companies’ profits fall below a certain threshold, the government will make sure they still turn a “profit.”

The money for this bailout fund will come from a tax assessed on insurance companies but actually paid for by you and me in the form of even higher premiums - premiums that you and I must pay in order to comply with ObamaCare’s mandate...

... or pay additional taxes to the IRS.

Either way, President Obama will get our money.

With more Americans walking away from the law, it is likely the fund will not have enough money to bail out every insurance company that will lose money from participating in ObamaCare.

While reports are the Administration will “find a way” to supplement the fund, this could well mean the President will sign yet one more Executive Order - this one giving even more taxpayer funds to the insurance industry!

As ObamaCare’s failures have become clear, President Obama has tried to “fix” his law with a series of executive orders changing or delaying various features of the law.

Implementing many of the changes imposes tremendous costs on the President’s insurance company cronies. Many of these companies are also suffering losses because of the lack of young people enrolling in the exchanges, despite a multi-million dollar, taxpayer-funded propaganda campaign aimed at convincing them to enroll.

The exchanges hinge on large numbers of young and healthy people enrolling in the exchanges so the (over-priced) premiums can allow the insurance companies to profit from their participation.

But the failure to attract young people, combined with the costs of the President’s numerous re-writes of the law, are forcing President Obama to go to Plan B — an insurance industry bailout.

Fortunately, legislation (H.R. 3541/S. 1726) has been introduced to repeal the ObamaCare bailout.

Given that repealing the bailout provision would deal a potentially fatal blow to ObamaCare, you might think the GOP leadership would be eager to advance this legislation. You might even think they would try to make this a condition of agreeing to yet another increase in the debt ceiling.

After all, they have been talking about how much they supposedly want to weaken ObamaCare ever since it became law.

But the health insurance industry wields tremendous behind-the-scenes power in both parties.

The DC media is already reporting that swarms of insurance-industry lobbyists are descending on Capitol Hill to “persuade” Congress not to block their ObamaCare bailouts.

And Capitol Hill sources are saying the lobbyists may be successful! The leadership of both parties is reluctant to alienate such a powerful industry.

They want to continue to issue press releases, make speeches, and hold symbolic votes against ObamaCare so you think they are serious about repealing it without doing what they can to address those provisions that benefit politically powerful industries.

The only reason the GOP leadership made even a half-hearted attempt to defund ObamaCare is because grassroots Americans dragged them kicking and screaming into that fight.

Clearly, the only way the GOP leadership will move to end the ObamaCare bailouts is if they feel the heat from grassroots Americans who are tired of crony capitalism.
