The Trump administration wants to gut Net Neutrality

From Free Press Action Fund:

The Trump administration, the Chairman of the FCC and greedy corporations have banded together to kill the Net Neutrality protections passed by the FCC in 2015. But they’re about to find out what happens when you mess with our internet.

On July 12, people, organizations and companies will be participating in a day of action to save Net Neutrality. Will you join us?

Sign up to participate in the day of action and we’ll give you more details about the things you can do: from changing your profile picture to posting a blog — we have options for everybody!

This is going to be the biggest day in the fight for internet freedom — you won’t want to miss it.

Internet service providers, like Comcast, Verizon and AT&T, are doing all they can to take away your right to an open internet — even while they admit that Title II Net Neutrality rules haven’t harmed online investment or innovation one bit. The truth is, they want to control what we do and say online, and charge us more for full speed internet access. July 12 is the day we fight back.

Join the internet-wide day of action to save Net Neutrality.

Thanks for all you do—

Support the First Amendment Defense Act

From Public Advocate:

News just broke today that Kim Davis will be released from jail.

You see, while many enjoyed the final days of summer this past Labor Day weekend, Public Advocate staff and volunteers traveled to Kentucky and organized rallies for Kim Davis and Religious Liberty.

Armed with signs, petitions, and water for Kim Davis' supporters, Public Advocate took to the street in front of the detention center.

But the judge ordered, "Davis shall not interfere in any way, directly or indirectly, with the efforts of her deputy clerks to issue marriage license to all legally eligible couples."

This is not the end of this story. The judge threatened Davis with "appropriate sanctions" if she disobeys this order.

While her freedom is certainly worth celebrating, the precedent has now been set.

Who will be the next targeted victim of the anti-Christian Left?

Who will be the "Kim Davis" sentenced to jail for the crime of being a Christian?

Tell Congress, "No more Kim Davis jailings, pass the First Amendment Defense Act now," with a generous donation of $5 or $10 right away.

For years I have warned there will come a day when radical homosexual judges and their allies in the Homosexual Lobby will jail Christians who profess their faith, and now the day has arrived.

This is the fight Public Advocate has waged for years and continues to fight daily.

Congress must act now to protect Religious Liberty.

Over 140 Congressmen are co-sponsoring Raul Labrador’s First Amendment Defense Act in the House and over 36 Senators are co-sponsoring the Senate version.

But House Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy are stalling to bring the bill up for a vote.

How many more Christians facing prosecution will it take to break the stranglehold of the radical Homosexual Lobby’s power over Congress?

Exercising Religious Liberty is not a crime.

So please, click here to sign your petition and help Public Advocate be the voice of thousands of pro-Family Americans by prayerfully considering a generous donation of $5 or $10 right away.

For the Family,

HON. EUGENE DELGAUDIO
President, Public Advocate of the U.S.

P.S. Public Advocate staff and volunteers rallied this weekend in Kentucky in support of Kentucky Clerk Kim Davis. After spending five days in a jail cell for defending Real Marriage, Davis was finally released.

But the radical Homosexual Lobby is already prepared to pounce on their next victim.

Tell Congress, "No more Kim Davis jailings" by making a generous contribution of $5 or $10 in support of the First Amendment Defense Act right away.

Tell the FCC to preserve net neutrality

From Fight For The Future:

Hey, there's an urgent update on this.

We are hearing that the FCC is finalizing their net neutrality proposal *right now* and it's not looking good. The Wall Street Journal just reported that the agency is hurtling toward a fake "hybrid" proposal that will attempt to appease the public but leave the door wide open for Cable company censorship and abuse [1]. This could be our last chance to affect the FCC's decision, we need to make our voices heard now, louder than ever, or all the work that we've done could be for nothing. Click here

This is an emergency. But we built a secret weapon to finish the job and make it impossible for the FCC to ignore us. Will you join thousands of others calling to demand net neutrality?

The FCC is gearing up to ignore millions of people's comments -- so we need to take action that they can't ignore. We've already heard that these phone calls are really getting to them. We can't stop now! If you already made the call, or became one of our heroic daily callers, thank you! You can still help by sharing our CallTheFCC.com tool with everyone you know. How many of your friends can you get to call every day?

We are hearing rumors that the FCC is hurtling toward a compromise that will try to appease the public outcry, but will leave the door open for Cable company censorship and abuse. It's absolutely imperative that we make noise right now and show that we won't back down until we get what we want: a free and uncensored Internet for all.

Last chance! Click here to take action for net neutrality before it's too late.

We'll keep you posted as things develop. Thanks for all you do.

Preserve net neutrality oppose the merger

From Fight For The Future:

Comcast is trying to kill net neutrality by making sure the FCC ignores the millions of public interest comments it’s already received. The other way they're trying to kill net neutrality in the very near future — get even bigger.

Comcast is trying to merge with Time Warner. People already hate them — high prices, bad customer service, and lack of choice in the first place. People haaaaaate the merger because it means even higher prices and worse service. The FCC also has a comment period for the merger that ends in October, but we know how hard we have to fight to win that kind of battle.

There’s another way but it goes away in two days. The most powerful way to stop the merger and Comcast’s power is to deny Comcast of the transfer of 2.6 million Time Warner customers in NY State, and effectively make the merger impossible. There are two people who might just become Governor and Lt. Governor of NY who will outright make sure that transfer doesn't happen.

Stand with them, and they can stop the merger for us. Click here to learn more.

And, on top of that, every bit of support they get, puts net neutrality on the ballot as a top political issue -- this race is the most important race to show just that.

Can you imagine the look on the faces of Comcast executives when NY stops them from having 2.6 million customers and chips away at their net neutrality prowess? North Carolina, Ohio can do this too, but there's nothing like denying them NY.

That's a real plan, we should take it and support some of the most fearless public reformers turned political crusading politicians. Zephyr Teachout was on our board (!) and got cited in the dissent for the Supreme Court's Citizens United, and TIm Wu wrote the law brief that defined net neutrality and coined the term! They have dedicated their lives to fighting big cable (and big banks) and one of their first steps is going to be stopping the merger for us.

Join them: http://www.teachoutwu.com/stop_the_merger

Yours for Team Internet,

Tiffiniy Cheng

P.S. Just in case you’ve been living under a rock the past week, you should know there is a huge day of action for net neutrality September 10th. Click here to join the Internet Slowdown!

P.P.S. did you see this tweet from Glenn Greenwald? “ Read this scathing@lessig post on money in American democracy & the indescribable hideousness of Andrew Cuomohttp://lessig.tumblr.com/post/96815186012/what-new-york-really-says-and-could-say …”

Join the protest to protect Net Neutrality

From Demand Progress:

Imagine all your favorite websites taking forever to load, while you get annoying notifications from your ISP suggesting you switch to one of their approved “Fast Lane” sites.

Think about what we would lose: all the weird, alternative, interesting, and enlightening stuff that makes the Internet so much cooler than mainstream Cable TV. What if the only news sites you could reliably connect to were the ones that had deals with companies like Comcast and Verizon?

How would your worldview be different? Do you think you’d have found Demand Progress or other causes you care about? Would you be getting this email?

On September 10th, just a few days before the FCC’s comment deadline, public interest organizations are issuing an open, international call for websites and internet users to unite for an “Internet Slowdown” to show the world what the web would be like if Team Cable gets their way and trashes net neutrality.

We need everyone on board for this. Got a website or blog? Find out how the slowdown works and how you can join here.

If you don’t have a website, you are still part of this! Here’s a quick list of things you can do to help in the Battle for the Net.

This isn’t about how quickly our cat videos load, it’s about the future of our ability to communicate, to learn, to create, and to rebel. It’s about the future of humanity.

We've proved time and again that even concentrated monopoly and government power is no match for the power of people’s voices connected and amplified by the free and open web.

That power is our greatest asset as we take on some of the country's wealthiest, most aggressive, and most corrupt corporations. This could be one of our last chances to defend it.

If we lose it, we lose a lot more than just the Internet. If we win, we win a lot more than just streaming video. The stakes are high and we should be acting like it.

The Internet is counting on each and every one of us to act. Let’s not let ourselves down. See you on the net September 10th!

Thanks.

Nationwide protest at FCC headquarter

From Fight For The Future:

This is it people. In less than 24 hours, the FCC will vote on a proposal for net neutrality rules that will affect every single person reading this email.

Here are three things you can do right now:

First, telecom lobbyists are pulling every string they have in Congress as we speak. It's scary how powerful and organized they are. Everyone we know needs to tell Congress to not let the FCC sell out net neutrality right now.

Second, join a rapid response gathering at FCC offices near you. MoveOn has events planned in over 20 U.S. cities! Click here to find one near you.

Of course, the biggest and baddest protest is our Occupy the FCC encampment in Washington DC. It's our last night sleeping there, and tomorrow we'll join with tons of other groups for a Save the Internet rally in front of and inside the FCC, starting at 9am. Near DC? Come down when you get this. We'll be there!

Third and finally, if you have a website, blog, or tumblr, use this awesome widget code to drive an online wave of emails to Congress that the FCC can't ignore: #StopTheSlowLane

Remember, the FCC is voting on this tomorrow so we need everyone to take action right now.

We are winning but we can’t let up!

For the internet,

-Evan, Tiffiniy, and Kevin

Fight for the Future

P.S. At around 10 AM this morning FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler came out of his castle to meet with Occupy the FCC demonstrators who have been camped out on the agency's doorstep for an entire week. He’s now (finally) willing to debate about reclassifying Internet providers as common carriers, which is the only step that can stop ISP's from slowing down our favorite sites.

P.P.S. Our tiny team has been literally working around the clock on this for the past week and we are thrilled with the results. Nearly every major media outlet showed up at the encampment today. If you want to help us keep winning, please donate as generously as you can today.

Help grow the support for Net Neutrality

From Fight For The Future:

In just four days, the FCC will vote on whether to kill net neutrality. That’s four days to save the free and open Internet.

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler is already facing a huge public backlash to his proposal to let cable and phone companies create an Internet fast lane for big corporations. But to get a majority of FCC commissioners to vote against his proposal, we need to make them feel the heat big time.

So we’ve helped launch one of the most sustained and widespread protests for Internet freedom ever.

It started in Washington, D.C., where a courageous group of about 10-20 hard-core activists have set up camp in front of the FCC offices -- and are staying there day and night until the FCC drops their proposal to kill net neutrality. Then, to build momentum, we’re organizing similar encampments in front of FCC offices in 27 other cities and recruiting people to join in so that the crowds keep growing as the days pass.

This is bigger than anything the FCC ever expected -- and the media has really taken notice. But to pull off something like this costs money -- and we’re counting on folks who can’t just drop everything and camp out for days and days to chip in financially. Plus, with the vote less than a week away, there just isn’t much time. Can you make a donation today?

Yes, I’ll make a donation to save net neutrality.

People hate the idea of different websites being treated unequally -- and more the public learns about the FCC’s proposal to kill net neutrality, the less they like it. Our challenge is to take what would otherwise be an obscure bureaucratic procedure and put it front and center in the public debate.

Occupy Wall Street showed how a sustained protest like this can start small but quickly catch fire and really make noise. But to get it off the ground requires a lot of support, including money for things like sleeping bags, Wi-Fi hotspots, Clif Bars and massive amounts of coffee. That’s why your donation right now is critical.

Verizon and Time Warner have hundreds of millions of dollars and armies of Gucci-clad lobbyists on their side. But remember the great Internet blackout of 2012 to stop SOPA and PIPA? We proved that if enough of us speak out, we can win.

But with just 4 days before the FCC vote on whether to kill net neutrality, we all need to step up. Can you make a donation to help save the free and open Internet?

Yes, I’ll make a donation to stop the FCC from creating an Internet for the 1%.

Yours for the Internet,

Tiffiniy, Evan, Holmes and the whole Fight for the Future Team

Make Harry Reid resign

From Stop Reid PAC:

Harry Reid must go.

Time and time again, Harry Reid has used his position as Majority Leader to benefit his family, friends and close advisors. That is why we are asking you to sign the Resign NOW Petition demanding Harry Reid resign after a slew of scandals for the Nevada Democrat.

The latest story to break involves Harry Reid's son, a Chinese solar-power company, the Bundy cattle ranch in NV and the Bureau of Land Management's Director, a Reid political ally.

You see Ray, ENN Energy Group, represented by Rory Reid, wanted to build a $5 billion solar farm and panel-building plant on county and federal lands. There are two significant issues with this breaking story, and it all circles back to Harry Reid.

First, Rory Reid, through his dad's influence, pushed through the sale of lands owned by Clark County priced considerably lower than the appraised value.

The other issue is that cattle rancher, Cliven Bundy, has grazing rights on these Federal lands -- land his family has been using since the 1870's.

Bureau of Land Management (BLM), whose Director is a former senior aide to Reid, Neil Kornze, brought in thugs to seize hundreds of Bundy's cattle.

The BLM and Harry Reid only backed down when patriotic Americans came out en masse to support Bundy.

The common denominator in all this...Harry Reid.

That's why we are asking you to sign the Resign NOW Petition to shed light on all of Reid's shady dealings.

Just last month, Harry Reid was outed for his campaign blowing between $17,000 and $31,000 on "jewelry" from his granddaughter's company for staff and campaign donors. Under pressure from transparency groups, Reid eventually wrote a check to reimburse the campaign.

But he still will not acknowledge any wrongdoing, telling journalist to stop "probing into [his] family's affairs."

See a pattern of political cronyism? And these stories are just Reid's actions in the last two months!

Political cronyism isn't the way to run our country. It's obvious Harry Reid is abusing his position as Senate Majority leader to give unfair advantages to his family, political allies and donors - at the expense of every American.

At Stop REID PAC, we have one mission: to remove Harry Reid's control over the United States Senate. It's a simple concept, but we will have an uphill battle to overcome the safety barriers Reid has created to protect his position.

I hope you will not only sign our petition, calling on Harry Reid to resign, but also consider chipping in $10 today so that we can reach other patriots with this message.

I know you agree that Harry Reid and his chums shouldn't abuse the power of a United State Senator. That's why we need your signature today!

Thanks for your support.

Sincerely,

Greg Campbell
Conservative, Chairman of Stop REID

P.S. We need to unite our voices against Harry Reid, his abuse of power, and shady dealings. Harry Reid should be working hard to represent the best interests of the American people -- not a Chinese power company. Will you join us in signing Stop REID PAC's Resign NOW Petition?

Join the protest to protect the net

From Demand Progress:

This Tuesday, February 11th, is The Day We Fight Back (against mass surveillance) -- and we need your help to make it as impactful as it can be.

Click here to learn more and to sign up to take part.

Then click here to share on Twitter and here to share on Facebook.

We understand the United States to be a democracy, founded upon a Constitution that affords us critical rights, and governed by the rule of law.

Yet for years, the NSA has exploited secret legal interpretations to undermine our privacy rights -- thus chilling speech and activism, and thereby threatening to subvert the very underpinnings of our democracy itself.

This Tuesday, February 11th, dozens of major websites and organizations are joining together to demand an end to mass spying.

They range from the left (sites like DailyKos) to right (the Koch Brothers' group FreedomWorks), with plenty in between. Together, they wield a tremendous amount of influence.

On Tuesday, February 11th, we are mobilizing thousands to call on Congress to:

1.Pass the USA FREEDOM Act, which would end the bulk collection of Americans' phone records and institute other key reforms.
2.Defeat the so-called FISA Improvements Act, which would entrench -- and potentially expand -- the spying.
3.Create additional privacy protections for non-Americans.
4.End the NSA's subversion of encryption and other data security measures.

We're reminding you about it today because we need your help to make Feb. 11th all that it can be. We have built a banner that people -- like you -- can post on websites they run, in order to encourage their visitors to take action on the 11th. Those banners will look like this:

Click here to visit TheDayWeFightBack.org and learn more. While you're there, please use the social media tools to spread word, and if you have a website, please install the banner code to make it appear on your site on Feb. 11th.

You might think this seems different from the way we usually fight for or against legislation, and you'd be right. But this sort of activism has proved particularly successful at defending the Internet against bad policies.

In particular, it is very similar to what worked during the fight against another bill that threatened to undermine our civil liberties: The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), which would have instituted a new Internet censorship scheme. You might remember that thousands of websites mobilized their visitors to help defeat that legislation two years ago.

As in other major battles for Internet Freedom, we think an online uprising can work again now.

Click here to learn more and sign up your website to take part.

Then click here to share on Twitter and here to share on Facebook.

And we're not even that far from winning on at least one key front:

The USA FREEDOM Act has more than 100 bipartisan sponsors, including two powerful lead sponsors: Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Representative James Sensenbrenner (R-WI), who was the original author of the PATRIOT Act and is furious that it has been abused to spy on Americans en masse.

This summer an amendment that's very similar to parts of the USA FREEDOM Act failed to pass in the House of Representatives by just a handful of votes. Enough lawmakers now say they would have voted in support that it would pass if it came up for a vote today.

That's in large part because of the groundswell of grassroots energy that Demand Progress members like you brought to bear in support of the amendment.

Now it's time to move the ball forward once more.

Click here to learn more about this Tuesday's The Day We Fight Back, sign up your website to take part, and spread word to your friends.

If we persist, we will win this fight.

Public Advocate protests Terry McAuliffe's inauguration

From Public Advocate:

Public Advocate caused major headlines in Virginia this week with our program to expose new governor Terry McAuliffe’s anti-Family agenda.

Last Saturday, Public Advocate took to the streets to protest at the inauguration of Virginia’s new governor.

And the whole state took notice of our pro-Family challenge.

Our dedicated volunteers turned out despite the torrential rains to support real marriage and family values.

You see, Governor McAuliffe has said he wants to overturn Virginia’s real marriage law in favor of “homosexual marriage.”

He also quietly promised the Homosexual Lobby that he would sign an executive order bringing the Gay Bill of Special Rights to this pro-Family state.

This executive order bypasses the legislature and gives homosexuals and transsexuals preferential employment status and protections.

But despite all the warning signs, Public Advocate was the only pro-Family organization to show up to protest.

As McAuliffe’s guests lined up for the event, our volunteers waved signs and handed out inaugural badges supporting real marriage.

Here you can see some pictures of our group in action:

Our brave group called out Governor McAuliffe's anti-Family threats against laws defending real marriage.

We showed state leaders that Public Advocate and the pro-Family Movement are a force to be reckoned with.

We also caught the attention of the local news, and as you can see, I was being interviewed here.

Public Advocate has earned the distinction of leading the very first protest against Virginia’s new governor for his anti-Family stance.

Numerous radio stations, blogs and even the local CBS station reported on our protest.

And the governor’s bureaucrats have already taken an interest in Public Advocate, asking for our documentation for the first time ever.

We believe it is the result of our proper and legal actions during the inauguration.

Of course, McAuliffe will be hearing a lot more from Public Advocate in the future.

As we warned, McAuliffe did sign the Gay Bill of Special Rights executive order before the day was over.

Public Advocate works both on the national level and in select state fights.
The Homosexual Lobby is relentlessly attacking on both fronts, and so we have to be prepared to defend both fronts.

But this street protest would not have been possible without your support and the support of thousands of other Americans.

The organization, transportation and materials -- none of it would have happened without generous donations.

So I hope you will continue to stand with me in the future.

You are a critical part of making all this happen, and I thank you for it!

For the Family,

HON. EUGENE DELGAUDIO
President, Public Advocate of the U.S.

We take back the internet

From Demand Progress:

In January 2012 we defeated the SOPA and PIPA censorship legislation with the largest Internet protest in history. A year ago this Saturday one of that movement's leaders, Demand Progress's cofounder Aaron Swartz, tragically passed away.
Today we face a different threat, one that undermines the Internet, and the notion that any of us live in a genuinely free society: mass surveillance.

We miss Aaron dearly. If he were alive, he'd be on the front lines, fighting against a world in which governments observe, collect, and analyze our every digital action.

Now, in honor of Aaron on the eve of the anniversary of his passing, and in celebration of the win against SOPA and PIPA that he helped make possible, we are announcing a day of protest against mass surveillance, to take place this February 11th.

We can think of no way that he'd rather be honored than one that might have such a positive impact on the world.

We're calling it, simply, The Day We Fight Back.

You can visit the hub website we're building to support this effort at TheDayWeFightBack.org. It'll let you know how to help.

Meanwhile, right now: Aaron's friend Cory Doctorow, the filmmaker Brian Knappenberger -- whose film about Aaron will premiere at Sundance this month -- and representatives from Demand Progress and the Electronic Frontier Foundation are on reddit to talk about Aaron and the work we will do to honor him -- and push back against the NSA -- over the next month.

Click here to join the chat, and vote it up to make sure it's seen by as many people as possible.

As was often the case, Aaron said it best: “[We defeated SOPA] because everyone made themselves the hero of their own story. Everyone took it as their job to save this crucial freedom. They threw themselves into it. They did whatever they could think of to do.”

In the last 6 months we’ve seen that government agencies, namely the NSA and GCHQ and others, have broken laws and twisted legal interpretations to create an infrastructure of mass surveillance of all of us online.

This creates a dark form of censorship, of course, as people become afraid to speak freely-- and it’s one that undermines our security and our right to privacy as well. As users of the Internet, we have a responsibility to defend its freedom.

With SOPA, we had a clear goal: defeat a specific bill. In this case, we have to take a first step. We have some promising bills (like the USA Freedom Act) and terrible ones (the FISA Improvements Act). But we need our legislators to hear from people who love the Internet that we won’t stand by and let it be turned into a giant tool for mass surveillance. We need to push them to have the courage to support comprehensive reform. The kind of courage Aaron showed us all.

So today, on the eve of the anniversary of Aaron’s passing, we’d like to ask you to join us in stepping up to the plate once again in defense of a free, open and secure internet, where no one has to watch over their shoulder for big brother.

In memory of Aaron, and looking back to the successes of the SOPA campaign, we’d like to ask you to join us in a month of action, culminating in a day of action on February 11th. Here's what we need you to do today:

1) Visit TheDayWeFightBack.org to join in the activism.

2) And click here to join us, Cory Doctorow, Brian Knappenberger, and EFF to talk about Aaron and the activism we're going to undertake to honor him.

In solidarity,

Demand Progress

Protest the NSA's spying on American citizens

Right now the NSA is spying on everyone's personal communications, and they’re operating without any meaningful oversight. Since the Snowden leaks started, more than 571,000 people from all walks of life have signed the StopWatching.us petition telling the U.S. Congress that we want them to rein in the NSA. On October 26th, the 12th anniversary of the signing of the US Patriot Act, we're taking the next step and holding the largest rally yet against NSA surveillance. We’ll be handing the half-million petitions to Congress to remind them that they work for us -- and we won’t tolerate mass surveillance any longer.

We won the first round against the CFAA

From Demand Progress:

Alright. This email should serve as a pick-me-up.

We told you about that frightening new proposal that actually would have expanded and harshened the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act -- the law that makes it a potential federal crime to violate a website's fine-print terms of service agreement.

We asked you to help us stop it in its tracks.

Well, here's the big headline:

HUFFINGTON POST: Internet Activists Win First-Round Victory In Fight Over Anti-Hacking Law

It required a mad (exhausting) fury of activism and lobbying, but it looks like we've won this battle.

And we're fresh off of our rally in Boston this afternoon -- we went offline and took to the streets. And as you can see from this photo, it was a great success.

We rallied downtown and marched to the court house where Aaron's trial would've been coming to a close this week, and demanded criminal justice reform and accountability for the prosecutors.

This rally capped off a couple of weeks of activism in opposition to that expansion proposal and in support of CFAA reform -- which included 150,000 or so emails to Congress, thousands of tweets and phone calls, and a dozen meetings on Capitol Hill with key Congressional offices.

As the Huffington Post reported:

Internet activists won a major victory this week when House Republicans put the brakes on an effort to vote on reforms to federal anti-hacking laws. The reforms had become a legislative flashpoint in the wake of the death of Aaron Swartz, an Internet activist who was facing a bevy of charges under the controversial Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) before committing suicide in January.

So as you can see, our work together is having a concrete impact. The ground has shifted in our favor, on the CFAA and on Internet freedom in general.

We shocked the political establishment by responding to the new CFAA proposal so quickly, and we have ever-growing credibility and clout with policymakers and the media as we make our case about these issues that we all hold so dear.

But we'll of course need to keep pressing forward. In addition to the CFAA, we need to return our focus fighting the privacy-obliterating cyber-snooping CISPA bill this week, and there's much more on the horizon.

Thanks.

Demand Progress

Good news indeed. This shows activism pays off. Now only if MRA's did the same thing.
