Donate to safeguard the net

From Fight For The Future:

I have bad news.

We’re winning. We’re winning so hard. But our ability to keep winning is threatened.

We’ve mobilized millions of people to literally fight for the future of the Internet and defend our most basic rights in the digital age. We’ve had an incredible streak of victories, but our ability to communicate with our supporters and continue to organize the web to defend itself is being constantly undermined.

We doubled our Facebook following this year, but Facebook changed their algorithm so less people see our posts. We switched to a secure, open source platform for sending email to our members, but at any moment Google, Yahoo, or Microsoft could decide to send our emails to your spam folder, and a new Canadian law threatens to drastically limit our ability to send email to people who want to take action.

So here’s what we need to do:

We’re going to build an open source mobile app that will act as a rapid-response action alert system for the Internet.

We can’t do it without you. Will you chip in whatever you can to make it happen?

As long as we remain reliant on corporate means to get our message out, the Internet will never truly be safe. We can’t trust them. We need an independent method of getting the word out that lets millions of people take action easily and instantaneously, from their phones, wherever they are.

Imagine if politicians’ phones melted off the hook within hours every time they tried to advance policies that threaten the web. Imagine if Internet freedom supporters could easily communicate, protest, and organize petitions together using independent, open source, encrypted tools.

It’s all possible, and more. But we need to raise $50,000 before the end of the year to make it a reality. We don’t pull our punches, so we’re not exactly expecting big influxes of funds from major tech companies or foundations. We rely on people like you

As we were laying out these critical plans we received a surprise matching donation of up to $20,000 so if you give now before the end of the year your contribution will be doubled.

No amount is too small or too large -- chip in $3 or throw us 300 bitcoins if you’ve got em!

If you’re a developer or want to contribute to this project in another way, that’s awesome too, please get in touch with us.

We are 5 real people spread out all over the world who sit at computers almost 7 days a week doing our damnedest keep the Internet free. We keep our overhead low and spend every cent we can on our hard-hitting campaigns that frequently capture international news headlines. This year alone we organized over 30,000 websites to fight CISPA and NSA spying, used the Internet to get a teenager out of jail and save free speech, made 3 educational videos that were collectively viewed almost million times, raised over $1 million for Charity on Bitcoin Black Friday, and helped organize the largest protest against NSA surveillance in history where we delivered over 575,000 signatures to Congress.

I get goosebumps thinking of how much more we could accomplish if we had an app that lets us directly communicate with our members.

Not everyone can donate, so if you can, it’s up to you!

You’re awesome. All of you. Looking back at this year I’m overwhelmed by what we’ve done together. Keep in touch as we go into the new year, and we promise to keep fighting for you.

Yours for the Internet,

Tiffiniy, Evan, Holmes and the whole Fight for the Future Team
